What is a Pescetarian Diet?

If you’ve never heard of a pescetarian diet, we’re here to break it down. Here’s a quick etymology lesson; the word comes from a combination of “pesce,” which is Italian for fish, and the word vegetarian. Hence, pescetarian means a diet similar to that of a vegetarian, but with the inclusion of fish. Let’s talk about how Lombardi’s Seafood, the best seafood market in Orlando, fully supports this healthy lifestyle.

Pescetarian diets are not a new trend, and in fact, they have been here for thousands of years. Although not necessarily by choice, but simply due to circumstance, many civilizations have adopted a purely seafood and fish diet to sustain themselves. Island nation Japan and other Asian countries, as well as Mediterranean ones like Greece and Italy, have relied very heavily on fish for their primary protein.

This diet has as many benefits as there are fish in the sea! Because of the nutritional benefits of seafood, such as providing omega-3 fatty acids, complete proteins, a myriad of vitamins and minerals like Vitamin A, B, D, calcium and selenium, consumers of this diet are never malnourished. On the contrary, this diet and those like it are considered to be extremely healthy. They help people who already suffer from certain ailments, like iron deficiency, and cannot consume other types of protein.

What makes this diet stand apart from that of a vegetarian’s diet is that fish and seafood actually provides the complete nutrient set we need to function well. If you’re only consuming beans and nuts as your source of protein, you’re consuming what are known as incomplete proteins, which do not have the necessary nutrients and amino acids that we need; plus, they tend to be difficult to digest.

A pescetarian diet may not be for everyone, but we can all do our part to consume more seafood every week. The benefits of implementing more fish into your diet are irrefutable, so why not do something that’s going to help your body work its best? We suggest you stop by the best seafood market Orlando’s got, Lombardi’s Seafood Market, and purchase some seafood today. We are open seven days a week!

What to Look for with Fresh Fish

When it comes to seafood and fish, fresh is king. Over any other measure, freshness is what matters most, as a fresh fish will provide the greatest, most authentic taste and is actually healthy to consume. When you consume fish or seafood at a restaurant, you can’t be sure you’re getting the best fish in Orlando, unless of course you are eating with one of our partners. By purchasing and preparing your own seafood, you can be the judge; today we’ll show you how.

Ask Questions

The first thing you’ve got to be comfortable with is knowing that you can, and should, ask questions of your fish monger or the person selling you the fish. If they are selling you a quality piece of fish or other seafood, they should have no issue answering your questions regarding freshness, where it was caught, if it has been frozen or not, etc. These questions should be very simple to respond to, as they should be knowledgeable on the topic and are expecting these questions.

Use Your Senses

You’ve got to tune into your senses when you get to the fish market. When inspecting the fish visually, look for these signs:

  • The fish should have a moist look to it.
  • Its eyes should be clear.
  • Its gills should be a rich red color.
  • The flesh should bounce back when pressed.
  • There should be even color all around.
  • You should not see any dryness or scales coming off.

Next, pay attention to the smell. Despite what one might assume, a “fishy” smell is not desired. We want to smell a bit of saltiness of the ocean, but no typical fish smell, as this signals that the fish is not in great condition. You should absolutely ask to smell your fish up close if you can’t otherwise tell its scent.

That’s all it takes to get some delicious, fresh fish. By shopping at Lombardi’s Seafood Market, you’ll be taking back control of what you eat, and only you will determine if it is up to the quality standards you demand. Use these tips to purchase the best fish in Orlando from our market and any market across the country. Visit us to grab the ingredients for tonight’s meal. We’re located on West Fairbanks Avenue.

Soft-Shell Blue Crabs Are in Peak Season!

One of seafood’s most prized and coveted delicacies is crab. The entire ordeal, from catching it to eating it, is a holy ritual for many, despite it being a bit of a challenge. Today, Lombardi’s Seafood Market is going to let you in on a little secret. Soft-shell blue crabs are in peak season, which means the seafood in Orlando just got a whole lot better! Keep on reading to find out why.

You might be asking yourself right now, “what’s a soft-shell blue crab?”, and you wouldn’t be alone. The truth is that soft-shell blue crab is not a different species from the regular blue crab we find in our waters. It’s the exact same animal, but at a different stage in life.

As a crab grows, so too must its shell. Given that a shell is made of a hard material that doesn’t expand, the crab’s only recourse is to pop it off and create a new one that fits its new size. They first grow a soft shell around their body, then they fill in the gaps between the soft shell and the hard shell with water, helping to pop it off. This process is known as molting and a lot of animals go through it. It is at this stage that these crab are caught, making us all very happy.

A soft-shell crab makes consuming it vastly easier. We don’t have to work against a tough shell to get to the meaty goodness we desire. Best of all, the flavor remains intact, which means there really are no downsides to this. The only issue is that the time period in which crab are going through this process is relatively short. While there is enough crab to go around, the season for soft-shell blue crab comes and goes in the blink of an eye.

If you love the taste of crab but hate dealing with the hassle that it can be, now is your chance to act. Soft-shell blue crab is one of the best seafood in Orlando, and it won’t last! Make your way over to Lombardi’s Seafood Market on West Fairbanks Avenue in the heart of Orlando to get your fix today.

Five Ways to Prepare Shrimp

Shrimp are one of the best kinds of seafood in Orlando because they are so versatile. We can prepare them in seemingly endless combinations and achieve different results each time. LetLombardi’s Seafood Market show you five ways to prepare shrimp so you’ll never be out of ideas again!

Many culinary experts posit that roasting shrimp is the best way to go about cooking it. They argue that the oven allows them to darken and caramelize while intensifying their flavor and sweetness. We suggest tossing your shrimp in some olive oil and salt and then roasting at 400 degrees in the oven for six to eight minutes.

Breaded shrimp are often found at popular restaurants, but they’re very simple to make at home as well. Peel and devein first, then decide whether or not you’d like to keep the tail. Next, cover them completely in a mixture of flour, egg, and breadcrumbs and fry them in oil until they are golden brown which should only take one to two minutes.

Peruvian Style: Ceviche!

Ceviche is a Peruvian method of cooking in which the best seafood in Orlando is chopped up and marinated in a fresh, citrus mixture. Purchase some fresh shrimp and your dish will come together in no time whatsoever.

Grill Them

Grilling your shrimp is one of the most popular ways to prepare it, and it’s fast too. A great dish for beginners, this will be complete in a matter of minutes! Grab about one and a half pounds of shrimp, some olive oil, lemon juice, chili powder, salt, and cayenne pepper. Toss it all around and then pop your shrimp onto the grill. So simple, yet so good.

Garlic Sauce

For only about 25 minutes of cooking, you can have a pretty special interpretation of traditional garlic and shrimp. Simply grab your garlic and sauté it in a skillet with some avocado oil. Once you can smell its flavorful scent, add broccoli, snap peas, bay leaf, any sauces, and of course your shrimp. Enjoy!

Your family will be thanking you, all whilst wondering how you managed to do so much in so little time.

Grilled Triggerfish

Get your grill going hot, and you’re good to start. Grab your fish fillets, and salt and pepper them to taste. Brush them with some olive oil. Within less than 20 minutes, your fish will absorb the delicious, smoky flavor from the grill, and you’ll be good to go. Quick tip: don’t rush flipping your fillets because they might tear! Only flip once and when the fillet is ready; it will release easily from the grill.

Gulf Shrimp with Romesco Sauce

Pour the sauce over the shrimp, and cook them in the oven at 425 degrees for 10 minutes. Easy!

Fillet Your Salmon with Style

When it comes to the kitchen, many of us feel like underperformers. Whether we have a hard time following a recipe or our cooking skills are rudimentary, sometimes we fall into the trap of thinking we don’t belong in a kitchen. Lombardi’s is here to tell you why you’ve got to change that mindset, and we’re giving you actionable steps to do so. Today, we will show you how to take our Orlando seafood, particularly some salmon, and prepare it in several different ways. You’ve got to own your kitchen, and this is the first step in doing so.

A Carpaccio is traditionally a dish comprised of thinly sliced beef, but we’re using salmon instead. Grab your boneless, skinless fillet of salmon and slice it as thinly as possible. Place these slices in between some plastic wrap and carefully pound them to a 1/8th-inch thickness. Place them on a plate, and top them with minced egg, bits of radish, some herbs, and drizzle the dish with citrus juice and olive oil.

Choose a fillet and chop it up into tiny pieces to where it resembles ground beef. Mix this with other ingredients like a tablespoon of fish sauce, fresh herbs, a minced shallot, some citrus juice, oil, and salt and pepper to taste. You may then serve this in a bowl with some crackers.

Typically, ceviche is made with a lighter fish, but salmon will do just as well. You’ll cut your fillet into small cubes, and then pour ½ cup of lemon and ½ of lime juice on it. Toss in some minced jalapeno, diced mango, red onion, cilantro, and salt and pepper. Once cooked, drain and retain the liquid and reserve to the side. Add the ceviche to a bowl with some greens and pour more liquid in as necessary.

See how simple it was to manipulate our fillets of salmon into a variety of cuts and textures? Allowing yourself room to be creative is the only way you will gain confidence in the kitchen. Lombardi’s is your source of seafood, Orlando! Stop by our market on West Fairbanks Avenue today to try these methods out on your own.

4 Reasons to Eat More Seafood

No one ever complained about being healthier, which is why we all try our best to improve our lives every day. One of the simplest, most convenient ways we can do that is by incorporating some of the best seafood in Orlando into our diets. Fish and seafood are tremendously beneficial to our well-being. Today we’re discussing the top four reasons to eat more seafood!

  1. Reduce Your Risk of a Heart Disease
Were you aware that the number one cause of death in adult Americans is heart disease? Bringing seafood into your diet can help. Research shows that you can see up to a 36% reduction in risk of heart-related death by simply consuming fatty fish one or two times per week. That’s a significant, noticeable benefit to people around the country – they just have to get in the habit of doing it!
  2. Get Better Sleep
Sleep is vital, yet good quality sleep is often elusive. New research has good news for those consuming the best seafood in Orlando. The study shows that individuals who ate three servings of fish per week found that they saw improvements in the quality of their sleep as well as their everyday functioning. If you could change your life for the better by doing one thing differently, why wouldn’t you?
  3. Give Your Brain a Boost
As you may know, fish and seafood are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These nutritional fats help your brain process and store information, which is why individuals who consume these foods often perform better on exams and show improved memory performance. Whether you are a student who needs to study for an upcoming test or a working professional who could benefit from enhanced memory, eating more seafood can help.
  4. Your Source for Vitamin D
As Americans, we could all get out a little more and stand under the warmth of the sun. Thanks to the sun, our body generates Vitamin D that can help us lead healthy lives all around, but if the sun isn’t out (or we’ve been staying in), our bodies will lack this essential vitamin. Over 40% of Americans are deficient in this vitamin; don’t be one of them! Get your vitamin D from fish, the best dietary source for it!

Introducing Seafood to Your Child’s Diet

You love seafood, whether it is for the health benefits or the taste. You want to introduce your child or toddler to the best seafood in Orlando, but you’re unsure how to go about it. Today, Lombardi’s is going to discuss the best way to approach the situation, including what risks to consider and which precautions to have in mind.

When To Start
If you’ve just had your baby, you would still need to follow the recommended guidelines of waiting four to six months before introducing solids into your baby’s diet. After that point, it is safe to introduce solids in small amounts, and certainly so for toddlers past the one-year mark. You would only wait to do so if your child has a medical condition or is on antibiotics, as their immune defenses might be lowered.

How to Do It
You’ll want to start, as with most foods, by introducing one food at a time. Fish, and even the best seafood in Orlando, can potentially produce allergic reactions in many people, which is why you should tread carefully during this process. Start with a small amount of one specific fish or seafood and wait up to three days before introducing another. The reasoning behind this is that if one food does cause a reaction, it is easy to pinpoint it. For this very reason, it is recommended that this process occur at home, as restaurants are infamous for cross contamination.

Risks to Consider
Apart from the potential allergic reactions we have already touched upon, you need to consider the risk of toxicity contained in seafood. Certain fish and seafood contain high amounts of mercury, which is toxic and can harm brain development. As with adults, limit fish servings only to those low-mercury fish such as catfish, canned light tuna, and salmon. Try other varieties in low quantities as they grow older.

Consuming the best seafood in Orlando is extremely beneficial and is healthy for our bodies, but precautions must be taken when children are involved. Every member of your family can enjoy something from Lombardi’s Seafood Market; all it takes is some considerations and planning to get it done. If you have any more questions, visit us on West Fairbanks Avenue!

Four Ways to Cook Catfish

Of the best seafood in Orlando, Catfish tops the list. It is not only rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, but it also provides your body with the vitamins and minerals it needs, such as B12 vitamins and phosphorous, which help with maintaining a healthy brain. We recommend American farm-raised catfish, which is lower in mercury than other varieties. In order to receive the greatest benefits of implementing catfish into your diet, we are going to show you four variations of cooking it that require minimal added fat.

Broil It

Broiling catfish is in fact one of the quickest ways to cook it. Simply brush the fish lightly with some olive oil and add your favorite spices including salt, pepper, garlic, and herbs such as thyme or parsley. Once your broiler is heated, place the fish close to the heating element and within about four minutes, your fish should be cooked and ready to eat!

Oven Fry It

Deep frying is undeniably delicious, but it is honestly just as tasty when oven fried. Simply marinate your fish in some low-fat milk for a few minutes, then coat it with some breadcrumbs. You can use whole wheat breadcrumbs for more protein, or ground nuts if you’d like to skip carbohydrates altogether. Then place them on a baking pan that has been covered with non-stick spray. In no time at all you will have a tasty, healthy meal ready.

Poach It

Poaching can be one of the simplest methods to get your catfish cooked. All it takes is setting up a pan with some vegetable broth or water with spices in it and letting that come to a simmer. Once it is to heat, simply add your fish and cook it for about 5 minutes. It will cook to just the right amount of flakiness without any added fat and through a very low-effort style of cooking.

Steam It

Steaming your fish will allow the natural flavors of the fish to be revealed. Use your preferred method of steaming, ensuring no water touches the filets, and allow it to cook for a few minutes. Once ready, drizzle some olive oil on it and add some lemon juice, salt, and pepper for taste.
It’s easy to pick catfish out from the best seafood Orlando has got to offer because it is so versatile, convenient to cook, and relatively inexpensive. Visit your source for fresh seafood in Orlando, Lombardi’s Seafood Market, located at 1888 West Fairbanks Avenue.

Eat Healthy in 2017 With These Four Fish

2017 is here and so is your chance to completely revamp your diet. You’ve been looking to eat more healthily, and we’re going to show you how you can do it. By taking advantage of the seafood in Orlando, you can implement these four fish into your everyday meals and start improving your eating habits right away. Fish provide you an easy alternative to red meats, avoiding cholesterol and excess fat while achieving your protein intake goals. Here are Lombardi’s top four recommendations.

Known as the fish with nine lives, this healthy source of protein will make you feel like you really can live forever! It’s chock full of omega-3 fatty acids that help with maintaining a healthy heart and brain. They also contain selenium, which is key in cell metabolism. Grill or broil some catfish sourced from America this afternoon!

Nobody is new to Salmon, so you already know how good it can be, as it can be prepared in a variety of dishes. The best thing about this fish is that it, too, is full of omega-3 fatty acids, which means well-being all around. A word of caution: larger and older salmon typically contain a high level of mercury, which can be toxic to humans. Ensure you only have one serving of Atlantic or farm-raised salmon every two months, although you may enjoy pacific canned salmon twice weekly!

We love tuna because it is inexpensive, yet still delicious. It provides your body with the protein it needs to function, all while doing so with low levels of fat. It also has vitamin B12, D, calcium, and iron. Choose skipjack or light tuna varieties to avoid the over-consumption of mercury.

If only your diet was as tightly packed of fish as a can is packed with sardines! Sardines are inexpensive and provide protein, a multitude of B vitamins, calcium, vitamin D, and those healthy omega-3 fatty acids we are all seeking. They are easy to eat right out of the can and can be paired with some crackers to create a quick, on-the-go meal. If you are watching your sodium, select a low-sodium variety.
With fish, you’ve got your healthy-eating resolution in the bag! Your 2017 is going to be so peppered by your increased consumption of seafood in Orlando that you’re going to wonder how you ever went without it! The Feast of Seven Fishes

fish-448556_1920The feast of seven fishes is a celebratory meal that takes place on Christmas Eve as per Italian and Italian-American tradition. Although several dishes are involved, their exact ingredients and recipes vary by family, and one style is not inherently better than another. Today, Lombardi’s Seafood Market is going to show you how to use the seafood in Orlando to tackle this huge endeavor of a feast and make your family proud! Let’s start at the very beginning with the first course.

  • The Snacks

You and your guests are in it for the long haul, so it is wise to have snacks readily available for both opening up the appetite and controlling it as guests wait for the next course. You might start with some crisp, toasted baguette slices paired with a substantive dip, such as whipped bacalao. A Vermentino wine would make for a wonderful accompaniment.

  • A Salad

A salad serves as the perfect preparation for the heavier, richer dishes that are yet to come. Why not try and amaze your guests with a pan-seared squid salad? As for wine, something light and bright will do.

  • Bring on the Meat

This dish is very important because it will be the real starting point of the feast. We suggest going with the best seafood in Orlando, such as some center-cut fish fillets from fish like cod, salmon, or bass. You might try a grilled prawn soup if you prefer. Offer your guests a riesling to provide acidity to balance your dish.

  • Pasta

It wouldn’t be Italian without pasta. A seafood pasta dish you should try is spaghetti with clams. Add toasted peperoncino for a kick, as it pairs excellently with the richness in the pasta and the saltiness of the clams. For the wine, choose something white and hearty.

  • Stew It Up

The final savory course should be a seafood stew. Try a cacciucco which is tomato based and full of delicious octopus, clams, and mussels. You might even add bass, cod, or squid instead. Offer your guests a pinot noir for its low acidity.

  • Cleanse the Palate

Not quite dessert, this course serves to cleanse the palate and leave you feeling refreshed. That’s why we recommend something with citrus in it, such as a citrus flavored gelato.

  • Dessert

The final and seventh course should be a dessert, such as cookies or cannoli or even a more complex, yet light dessert.

As you can see, preparing the feast of seven fishes is quite the task. Lombardi’s Seafood Market hopes you’ll be able to use some of the seafood in Orlando to prepare this feast for your family.

Seafood Choices Can Be Healthy Choices

appetite-1238569_1920For the health conscious, seafood has always been on the menu, but it is slowly becoming a staple in the diet of the average American. It’s easy to see why. Seafood is rich in protein and powerful nutrients that nourish your body, as opposed to junk food that simply keeps your stomach full. Let’s discuss how the seafood Orlando’s premiere seafood market, Lombardi’s, has in stock can help you reach your health goals.

Bones & Skin

Eating a few servings of salmon per week can help individuals with osteoarthritis or other similar conditions improve the strength of their bones and joints. It’s due primarily to the protein calcitonin found in wild salmon, which works to increase bone density. For those looking to develop healthier, brighter, and softer skin, you should begin consuming tuna fish regularly. It contains selenium, iron, and vitamin B, among a plethora of other nutrients, which work to rejuvenate the skin.

Brains & Brawn

Mussels are rich in B12 vitamins, iron, manganese, potassium, zinc, and several other nutrients that can help strengthen your immune system and increase brain function. It works by promoting red blood cell creation, which is a key process to maintain a healthy body. If you are looking to increase your protein intake, a lot of the seafood Orlando has to offer can get you there. One especially protein packed item is Cod, which has a significant amount of protein per serving while maintaining the calorie count low. Its mild taste is great for kids and adults alike, but it’s muscle-building protein is what drives many health-conscious individuals to eat it regularly.

If you have ever wondered about the health benefits of seafood, we hope to have given you a good idea of how much these foods can benefit you. At Lombardi’s, we provide the seafood Orlando consumers need to reach or maintain a healthy diet. Four Ways to Prepare Crab

crabs-601574_1920We’ve never met someone who has tried crab at a restaurant and not fallen in love. We’re here to reveal a little secret: it’s even better at home! Head over to Lombardi’s Seafood Market and get yourself some of the highest quality seafood in Orlando and prepare some crab tonight. Let’s look at four delicious methods to cooking crab at home.

Boil It

Boiling your crab is one of the simplest and easiest ways to prepare a salivating meal. Fill a large pot with water and add plenty of salt, enough so that you can actually taste the saltiness. You can choose to add extra flavor by incorporating beer or white wine, as well as any other herbs or spices you feel are appropriate, bringing the water to a boil. After adding the crab, the water will begin to boil once again and the crab will start floating. After about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the size of your crab, remove them carefully with some tongs and allow them to cool to a reasonable handling temperature.

Steam It

If you want to make sure no water gets inside your crab, steaming it is the way to go. This method preserves the natural crab juices and taste. Fill your pot with about an inch of saltwater and bring it to a boil. Place your crab in the steam basket or on the rack, and allow them to cook anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes, according to size. Then, enjoy!

Grill It

Grilling provides a nuanced taste but requires a touch more effort. You’ll have to clean the crab before placing it on the grill. Once cleaned, brush melted butter on them and cook them over a heated grill for about 10 minutes. Ensure the crab has browned slightly and that you’ve flipped it at least once for even cooking. Serve them hot or warm.

Roast It

Similar to grilling, a roasted crab must be cleaned prior to cooking. It is preferable to boil or steam the crab first, then clean them, then place them in the oven. Add melted butter, herbs, garlic, or other favorite spices to the pot and cook the crab for 10 minutes at 500 degrees Fahrenheit until they brown.

It’s that easy to incorporate fresh crab into any meal. Make your way over to our location on West Fairbanks Avenue and pick some up today. Check out the rest of our blog for more seafood cooking tips from Lombardi’s Seafood Market, your number one source of seafood in Orlando.

Get to Know Sushi: Terms You Should Know

food-1406883_1920Sushi is a Japanese cultural staple that has taken the world by storm in the last several decades. It comes in many shapes and varieties, but it is most commonly packaged in small portions consisting of rice, seaweed, and raw or cooked fish. Today Lombardi’s Seafood, your source for the best fish in Orlando, is going to explain some of the terms you should become familiar with if you are interested in preparing some sushi yourself.

Nigiri-zushi – This is the type of sushi that pops into your head when you think of sushi and it’s the one most popular outside of Japan. In its basic form it consists of a pad of rice with fish on top, and perhaps some wasabi.

Wasabi – If you’ve ever had sushi at a restaurant before, you have been served a little mound of a green paste on the side. This paste is referred to as wasabi, although it is not authentic wasabi. What you have encountered is reconstituted horseradish powder with food coloring. Real wasabi is hard to source for restaurants and is quite expensive, but you may find that some establishments do carry it.

Tempura – Tempura is seafood or vegetables that have been dipped in a batter and fried to give them a nice crunch.

Suzuki – Not the car, but instead the general Japanese name for sea bass.

Surimi – This is what is also known as imitation crab meat, or krab with a K. It is generally found in the California sushi roll.

Sashimi – Sashimi refers to the piece of raw fish fillets that are placed on top of the rice.

Sake – This is a rice wine that is very typical of Japanese-style restaurants. It can be served both hot or cold.

Hashi – These are your chopsticks! Use them wisely.

Gohan – This is plain, boiled rice.

Edamame – Typically served as a side dish or an appetizer, edamame is green soybeans that have been steamed and salted.

Tobiko – Flying-fish roe that can be served on top of nigiri-zushi and provide a crunchy texture and a pop of red color.

There you have it, the most important sushi terms that will help you understand what sushi and its accompaniments are comprised of. Learning these few simple terms will make you sound like the well-educated food connoisseur you were born to be. Head over to Lombardi’s Seafood right now and pick up the best fish in Orlando to use in a sushi recipe! We’re located on West Fairbanks Avenue, at the heart of Central Florida.

A Refresher Course on Seafood & Wine Pairings

wine-426466_1920Seafood and wine: a match made in heaven. If you’re like us, you probably like to pair delicious, savory seafood in Orlando with quality wines. Wine and seafood work together to create a cohesive flavor ensemble that is good enough for even the most refined palates. Today Lombardi’s Seafood is going to share some of our favorite pairings and suggestions for you to make your own seafood and wine dreams a reality.

Clam Casino & Albariño

A clam casino is a tasty appetizer comprised of bacon, butter, bread, and clams, of course. It pairs excellently with Albariño, a Spanish wine from the northeastern Rias Baixas region, commonly referred to as the “wine of the sea.” Its crisp texture helps to bring out all of the flavors of the appetizer.

Salmon Kabobs & Pinot Noir

Red wines pair excellently with seafood dishes, and a grilled salmon kabob is no exception. Pinot noir is packed with rich flavors, many more of which you will discover with the help of the salmon. Its oily flavor makes a fantastic backdrop to the dramatic flavors in the Pinot noir.

Almonds & Champagne

This one is simple, but often simplicity makes a greater impact. Combine deliciously salted roasted almonds with dried fruit, like raisins or cranberries and grab a cool glass of Champagne. The flavor and texture of the wine make a great match to the saltiness of the almonds, which themselves are balanced by the chewiness of the raisins.

Crab Bisque & Viognier

Viognier is a close cousin of the Chardonnay, but with a greater floral nose that is capable of transforming a something simple into something extraordinary. Pair it with a crab bisque, or lobster chowder, and you’ve got a hit on your hands. The creaminess of these dishes requires a wine that can shine through.

We suggest trying any and all of these pairings as soon as you can! Whether you are having guests over, or if you simply would like to spruce up a mundane midweek meal, these pairings will work wonders. Stop by Lombardi’s Seafood Market for the best seafood in Orlando today. We’re located on West Fairbanks Avenue, in the heart of Central Florida.

Tips for Finding the Perfect Seafood Wholesaler

pompanoA local, fresh seafood wholesaler can make or break a business, which is why it’s important that you find the right one that is going to be able to meet your specific needs. Whether you are running a restaurant, hotel, or other local business, selecting the perfect wholesaler of Orlando wholesale seafood, such as Lombardi’s Seafood, is essential. Let’s talk about how you might find the one that’s appropriate for your needs.

Chain of Command

The supply chain for seafood looks like this: there’s a manufacturer up top, this would be the fishmonger or company responsible for collecting the seafood, who sources the product. Then there are wholesalers, also known as regional distributors, who sell either directly to a business or to a broker. The broker, or jobber as they are sometimes called, can deliver the product to a local shop, such as Lombardi’s. Oftentimes a broker is not necessary.

More Product, More Savings

Wholesale prices are remarkably lower than retail due to one thing: volume. Wholesalers can offer businesses better deals based on how much they are ordering, which is of great benefit if your company is growing. For smaller businesses, the benefits are still there, although they are not as dramatic as those with consistently large orders.

Where To Find A Wholesaler

Take your time when considering which Orlando seafood wholesaler you want to work with, as their expertise or lack thereof can have a significant impact on your business. Start your search online by searching for wholesalers in your city or by zip code. You can also check out the Yellow Pages or Trade magazines and search through their advertisement section.  You can also ask peers in the business, although refrain from asking direct competitors. Lastly, speak with manufacturers as they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Finding the perfect seafood wholesaler is a challenging task, but Lombardi’s Seafood hopes to make it much simpler. Our culinary and seafood experts understand Orlando wholesale seafood and can help implement it into your business, restaurant, or otherwise! Check out our product guide online or simply give us a call at 407-628-3474 if you have any questions. We are conveniently located on West Fairbanks Avenue and are awaiting your visit.

Cajun Shrimp & Crawfish Etouffee

asian-1239316_1920While it may not be easy to head over to Louisiana for dinner, we’re showing you how you can bring Cajun cooking home. This Cajun shrimp and crawfish etouffee is as close as you can get to Louisiana’s southern cuisine while staying in Florida! Let Lombardi’s Seafood Market guide you step by step as you prepare this recipe with the Orlando seafood you’ve purchased.

Before you start preparing this delicious, authentic, heck of a Cajun meal, you’re going to need to do some shopping. The list is long, but you’ll likely have many of these items already in your fridge.

  • ⅓  cup vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Louisiana hot sauce
  • 1/3 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons seafood seasoning
  • 1 cup fish stock
  • 1 lb crawfish tails
  • 1 pound medium shrimp, deveined and peeled

  • Chop up your veggies, including the green bell pepper, onion, celery, tomatoes, and mince your garlic. Set this to the side.
  • Grab a heavy skillet and add your oil, heating it over medium heat.
  • Slowly add your flour, stirring constantly, until it turns a dark brown, similar to the color of peanut butter. This is your roux, an essential part of the dish, which should take anywhere from 15-20 minutes to prepare. Make sure not to burn it.
  • Next, add your chopped onion, garlic, celery and bell pepper until it softens, about five minutes. Then add your tomatoes, fish stock, and seafood seasoning. Bring the heat to low and keep the mix simmering over the next 20 minutes, stirring on occasion.
  • Add your cayenne pepper (optional), black pepper, and the seafood.
  • Cook everything for 10 more minutes, or until your shrimp turns that pink color we all know and love.

What Diet are You Following? Seafood Works for Them All!

prawn-1239427_1920Before anyone makes a commitment to better their health through a specific diet, the most important thing they consider is: what will I be able to eat? It’s crucial to know what you’re signing yourself up for because much of what we do on a daily basis is centered on what we’re eating, so much so that we divide our day by the meal we’re having, whether breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner. Lombardi’s Seafood Market is here to tell you that you don’t have to worry if you focus on eating Orlando seafood since it fits into practically all diets!

  • Low Carb & Low Fat: For those focusing on a low-carb diet, fish is an ideal option as it has no carbohydrates at all. It is practically all protein and some healthy fats. Speaking of fats, a low-fat diet can certainly include plenty of fish and seafood. Although fish primarily contains healthy omega-3 fatty acids as its fat component, if you’re looking to maintain the lowest fat intake possible, eat these fish: orange roughy, tuna, pollock, mahi-mahi, cod, hake, haddock, sole, and flounder.
  • Gluten-Free: Whether you choose to follow a gluten-free diet because you believe it to be a healthy option or because you suffer from Celiac disease, fish and seafood can certainly be a part of your daily intake. Shrimp, other seafood, or the aforementioned fish make great options to choose from. Pay close attention to any marinades or seasonings added to your seafood, and stay away from imitation crab.
  • Mediterranean: The Mediterranean diet specifies very little red meat, and instead, suggests the consumption of seafood, fruits, and nuts. In fact, seafood is the largest category in the Mediterranean food pyramid, second only to fruits, vegetables, and grains. Fish full of healthy omega-3 fatty acids will play a crucial part in lowering your cholesterol, which is the purpose of this diet.

There you have it! Fish and seafood pair well, if not perfectly, with all of these diets and many more, like paleo or pescatarian! If you’re looking to take charge of what you eat every day, make the right choice: source your seafood from Lombardi’s Seafood Market, where Orlando seafood is our specialty. We’re located on West Fairbanks Avenue in Winter Park, so come take a look at our fresh and healthy seafood today.

The Link Between Eye Health & Seafood Consumption

eye-test-1313976_1280As we age, taking care of our bodies becomes even more vital because we want to do as much as we can to prevent any ailments that may come our way. A crucial part of our daily functioning is our eyesight, which can suffer from years of malnutrition. A couple of the greatest threats to our vision are cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), both of which can be improved with the help of a healthy diet, incorporating Orlando seafood.

Cataracts manifest themselves as blurry and cloudy spots in our eye’s lens, making it very difficult to see. With modern surgical procedures, many cataracts can be removed. AMD, on the other hand, means fundamental damage to the retinas, the back of the eye where light is converted into nerve signals which our brain interprets as sight. AMD affects at least 25 million people throughout the world and cannot be corrected.

The Role of Seafood

Seafood, particularly fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, and tuna, contain fat molecules that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Studies have shown that oil vitamin supplements are not as good as the real thing. These acids are essential in maintaining healthy eyes, with two being the major players, DHA and EPA. EPA helps the body create DHA, which is a major component of the retina.

Maintaining healthy levels of DHA in the body can prevent dry eye syndrome, AMD, diabetic retinopathy, and retinopathy of prematurity, which can impact us later in life. DHA is also of benefit when we are young, especially as children, when eye development is of extreme importance.

What To Do

If you want to give your body the best chance it has to prevent these disease, you need to implement a healthy diet right away. Here’s what to do:

  • Eat seafood rich in omega-3s, like salmon and tuna.
  • Consume foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, such as spinach and broccoli.
  • Eat foods with antioxidants, like blackberries

A healthy body starts with a healthy diet, so make sure you’re getting the Orlando seafood your body needs to stay in good shape. If you could actively prevent these diseases from affecting you in the future, why wouldn’t you? Stop by Lombardi’s Seafood Market and invest in your future, today.
